Overall Manhattan seems to be rated higher than the other boroughs, which is to be expected because most transit lines, particularly subway lines, are Manhattan-centric, connecting other boroughs to Manhattan. The outer boroughs received significantly lower scores, as did Roosevelt Island which has very limited transit options. Surprisingly, the east side of Manhattan tended to rate higher than the west side. The result found that recreational activities are concentrated in Manhattan, below 96th Street. The Bronx scored very low, but this appears accurate as there is rail impeding the waterfront at those locations. Upper Manhattan, especially Inwood, scored low as well. Red Hook, Brooklyn, for example, received a score of 0.0. The neighborhood is notoriously transit poor, with only two very infrequent buses that run through the neighborhood. This low scoring point in particular, is on a pier surrounded by industrial facilities. Another low scoring area was Northern Astoria, Queens, with a score of 2.0. The area, which fairly residential comprised of low story apartment buildings and single family homes, has few nearby shops and amenities. One of the highest scoring areas was the Financial District along Wall Street, with an accessibility score 95.4. This area has a high density of recreational opportunities, with many shops, restaurants, and historical facilities. Being one of the main concentrations for financial and business activity in the city, it’s also a hub for various modes of transit, including several ferries line, subway lines, and buses. Murray Hill, another high scoring neighborhood, with a score of 82.3, is close to many shops and restaurants, as well as Grand Central, another major transportation hub in the city. There are only two buses that serve Red Hook, the B57 and the B61, and neither bus arrives according to schedule (only 43% of B61 buses arrive on time). IKEA, in partnership with the New York Water Taxi, runs a ferry service from their store to Pier 11 on Wall Street. This ferry is free on the weekends, but during the week costs $5 each way to ride. Furthermore, the ferry schedule does not accommodate peaks in travel during rush hour, making it an unreliable form of transit for residents commuting to work in lower Manhattan. The ferry currently runs every 40 minutes from Manhattan between the hours of 2:00 pm and 7:40 pm on the weekdays, and from 11:20 am to 8:40 pm on the weekends. The neighborhood has no shortage of bicycle lanes. Almost the entire neighborhood was flooded during the storm. Water stretched for a mile from the Ikea, at the edge of the Erie Basin, all the way to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway that forms the northern border of the neighborhood. GBX was not unaffected, receiving about five feet of flooding during the storm. Some of the waterfront parcels are currently used for barge transportation, ship service, and other maritime related work. Red Hook also has an extensive existing park network, with Coffey Park and the Red Hook Recreation Center ball fields being the largest and most popular. However, both of these parks are located far from the waterfront. IKEA's privately-owned public park is the largest waterfront park in Red Hook, but it is separated from the rest of the neighborhood and existing park network by IKEA's large parking lot. Industrial properties comprise a large proportion of Red Hook's land use. Its proximity to highways, tunnels and bridges, and its convenient road access to Manhattan, make Red Hook an ideal location for industrial and manufacturing companies. In fact, GBX is located within the South Brooklyn Industrial Business Zone, or IBZ.
